International & Domestic Terminals
Phuket Airport Code · HKT
Phuket International Airport is located in Mai Khao, in the northern part of the island. Rather than operating as a single passenger hall, the airport has separate buildings for international and domestic traffic.
That distinction matters in practice. International arrivals pass through passport control before baggage collection and customs, while domestic arrivals follow a shorter arrival process. AOT identifies baggage reclaim belts 1–5 for international arrivals and 6–10 for domestic arrivals.
For anyone arranging a collection, transfer or meeting point, confirming whether the flight is international or domestic is therefore more useful than knowing only that it arrives at HKT.
International arrivals move through passport control, baggage reclaim and customs before entering the public arrivals area. Domestic passengers collect their baggage and exit through the domestic side of the airport. Departure procedures differ in the same way, with passport control forming part of an international departure but not a domestic one.
The airport operates around the clock, although individual shops, lounges, transport counters and airline services follow their own schedules. For that reason, a 24-hour terminal should not be read as meaning that every service inside the airport is available at every hour.
Information counters and passenger-assistance services are available within the terminal system, while passengers requiring mobility assistance can request wheelchair support through airline counters or designated airport service points.
Ground transport at Phuket International Airport is not built around a single onward route. The airport provides access to taxis, car rental, airport buses, ride-hailing services and other transfer options, and the practical choice depends on the final destination rather than on the airport itself.
AOT currently lists the Phuket Smart Bus route from the airport through several west-coast destinations including Cherng Talay, Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon and Kata before continuing towards Rawai. A separate airport bus connects the airport with Phuket Town.
For first-time visitors, this distinction is useful: Phuket is an island with several separate residential and tourism centres rather than one compact city surrounding the airport. Knowing the exact destination area before choosing transport can therefore matter more than simply choosing the fastest-looking option at the arrivals hall.
